Tourist welcome in Grotte di Castro

Comune Grotte di Castro

During Stage 38 of the Via Francigena, just before reaching Bolsena and less than 5 km from the section that passes through San Lorenzo Nuovo, you’ll find the small municipality of Grotte di Castro. Situated on a tuff cliff of the Monti Volsini, it was founded — along with Gradoli and San Lorenzo — by the survivors who escaped the destruction of the ancient Civita. The name “Grotte di Castro” derives from the rock cavities beneath the cliff.
